Chapter 11

A yawn of Gaia (the planet earth)
The high situation of Candide, perched at the top of a coconut, after the breaking of the tsunami, did not prevent it from having very low moral after the disappearance of his good Master Pangloss.
His companions, less affected, endeavoured to bring back it on ground and to its natural optimism.
Fortunate Bigboss: "It does not act, after all, that consecutive collateral damage with the birth of a splendid island, perhaps a new Bora Bora ! "
Martin added that: "I am convinced that your good Master Pangloss would not have failed to draw a completely positive conclusion from this regrettable event".
Candide: "If he had remained alive! What is not the case! "
It was not the case either of several thousands of drowned Polynesians who, like Pangloss, did not have the leisure to express their optimism.
Always paternal, Fortunate Bigboss, of a blow of wing and a few new thousands of dollars, took along his companions in the town of Sydney. From there, they went in the desert bush where the last aboriginals disappeared gradually, furiously opposing the objectives of multiple associations of safeguard.
"Here, explained Fortunate Bigboss, the men, like nature, are peaceful".
Martin: "Compared with human violences that we knew in Africa, it is a true paradise here! ".
Candide: "And with the violence of Gaia at Bora Bora, which deprived me of my dear companion Pangloss ! But this so calm continent seems me completely desert! "
Fortunate Bigboss: "Do you wish to go in a very populated country of planet, with a density of population of 1.000 inhabitants to km2 ? "
Martin and Candide: "Yes! Yes! "
Of a new blow of wings and other handlfuls of dollars, they joined Dacca, the swarming capital of Bangladesh.
Fortunate Bigboss commented on: "This country extends on the deltas from Gange and Brahmapoutre. It is one of the most populated and poorest countries of the world ".
Martin: "Is poverty the inescapable corollary of overpopulation? "
Fortunate Bigboss: "It is debatable. We have the counterexamples of cities or states like Hong-Kong and Singapore".
Candide: "Would poverty be the fruit of corruption? "
Fortunate Bigboss: "????? Corruption is very prosperous here, like elsewhere, neither more, nor less; much less in any case than in Africa ".
They undertook the visit, by water way, of the deltas and the cultivated grounds hardly located at three meters above the sea level. The vastness of the grounds was punctuated million manual pumps. They learned that the construction of more than one million wells had been financed by gifts of Unicef, with the assistance from the World Bank.
Candide: "You see well that one should not despair of the human nature since the international mutual aid appears up to now! "
Martin, lately informed: "International assistance is carcinogenic for the populations".
Candide: "How that? "
Martin: "The international experts who made build the new wells quite simply increased the poisoning of the populations by serenely neglecting the insalubrity of water. Water of the wells comes from the himalayan sources of Gange and Brahmapoutre. They are charged with arsenic which settles in the alluvial layers of the deltas. The more one pumps, the more one poisons the populations. A well moreover, it is, in the long term, of many cancer patients moreover. The experts were very powerful. But not exactly as it is generally believed! ".
Candide, dismayed: "The hell of good intentions! "
Fortunate Bigboss: "One nevertheless carried out good things, the assistance with micro-economics for example".
Martin "Micro-economics? "
Fortunate Bigboss: "In fact micro-loans make it possible hundreds of thousands of tiny one-man businesses to be created and to thrive".
Martin: "And which undoubtedly maintains their owners at the limit of poverty! "
Candide: "With goodwill and the international assistance, Bangladesh must sometime happen to prosper".
Fortunate Bigboss: "Perhaps".
Martin: "Topographically, Bangladesh is very vulnerable. It is subjected regularly, without any means of protection, with the cyclones and the floods. It is there that the international assistance is missing ".
Candide: "It will come surely a day".
It came only what was sure.
While yawning, Gaia expelled a cyclone. This cyclone generated a tidal wave. This tidal wave invades the deltas. The deltas and the harvests disappeared under water. Several hundreds of thousands of Bangladais were saved cancer but not death.
The international experts and the World Bank concluded that, this year, the gross national product from Bangladesh was going to fall of some points.
