Chapter 9

A tolerant democracy
Dwanra, where our travellers arrived, had the reputation to be a rare example of peaceful and tolerant society where the ethnic groups cohabited harmoniously, for long time ago, without any doubt in a miraculous way.
Therefore strong was their surprise, by reaching the capital, when they saw, all along the road, the calcined remainders of many vehicles. Often corpses, abandoned, strewed the the roadsides.
Martin: " Logic is again respected. The tolerance, here, it is to be able to throw its compatriots at bottom of the ditches... "
Candide, astonished: " What did it thus occur? It was been affirmed that this country was an oasis of peace in tormented Africa ".
Fortunate Bigboss, which had gotten information: " It was the past ".
Martin: " It was yesterday. We are today ".
Pangloss: " What means ? "
Fortunate Bigboss: " Why would you like that the tribal fights which opposed Hutsis, breeders, and Tutus, farmers, since generations, cease. It is not at all reasonable! ".
Candide: " Why isn't this reasonable? "
Martin: " Because Hutsis are not Tutus ....."
Fortunate Bigboss: " ..... and Tutus are not Hutsis ".
Martin: " Unavoidable reasoning ".
The capital flamed.
Hordes of Hutsis plundered and set ablaze the Tutus districts. They skewered and exterminated with heat, indistinctly, old men, men, women, children. Why those persisted with being Tutus? Whereas only Hutsis deserve to live ?
With not less eagerness, troops of Tutus, covered with kalachnikovs, proceeded to the same operations of public health in the Hutsis districts. There, obviously, only Tutus deserve to live!
Our travellers thus attended ethnic cleaning, meticulous and reciprocal, of the Tutus and Hutsis districts.
A group of Tutus, suspicious, seized our travellers and undertook to question them, not without roughness:
What did they make in the capital?
Why were they allied of the savage Hutsis?
Which help did they bring to the Hutsis breeders?
Which weapons had they delivered to them?
How many bazookas?
How many kalachnikovs?
How many ammunition?
Tutus, furious of the irresponsible denials of our travellers, were on the point of punishing them.
The kalachnikovs of Hutsis, suddenly, put a stop to the dissatisfaction of Tutus by sending them to join their ancestors, in a better world.
Hutsis questioned their new prisoners:
Why were they allied of the savage Tutus?
What did they make in the capital?
Which help did they bring to the Tutus farmers?
Which weapons had they delivered to them?
How many kalachnikovs?
How many ammunition?
How many bazookas?
New Tutus put a stop with their kalachnikovs to the interrogation of Hutsis by sending the latter to join the previous Tutus in a better world.
Our bold travellers, benefitting from the confusion of the battles, fled of the ex-capital of the tolerance.
Martin: " This african democracy has a rather singular design of the tolerance .... "
Pangloss: " Tutus and Hutsis are not intolerant but corrupt by civilization. If they did not be in possession of bazookas and of kalachnikovs, they would not fight thus ".
Martin: " No. They would fight to the death only with arcs, arrows and bludgeons. Beautiful advantage! "
Candide: " My good Master Pangloss is always right ! If one removed bazookas and kalachnikovs, Tutus and Hutsis would be tolerant in the best possible world ! "
Fortunate Bigboss: " As they merrily fighted to the death, since always, in best of the possible Dwanras ones ! "
Martin: " Not only in Dwanra! But also in Rundibu, Gonco... It is that the notorious privilege of the state of nature ....! "
